Sunday snapshots: kite flyers

I was wandering home along the banks of the foul-smelling, filthy Bagmati River that divides Kathmandu and Patan. It was late in the afternoon and I had been on the hot, crowded streets for most of the afternoon looking for office supplies. In the western world it’s simple. Here, not so much. Here one has to window-shop ten different pokey-places looking for genuine goods, or at least good fakes, not fake fakes. It’s quite the process.

My camera with its 50mm lens had stayed in my backpack all day until then. Sometimes one has those days: parched, sore-feet days; jaded days where art, life and inspiration seem not to exist.

And then I saw a couple of kids flying a kite from atop a mound of sludge. It was a scene begging to be photographed: the two tykes silhouetted against the cloudy sky, battling to keep their homemade kite from crashing into the river.

No matter where in the world you live, you can find something of beauty. Here it was two friends with a kite on a rubbish dump.

Magnificent work, the first silhouette is great and the kids smiles awesome all the more considering their likely circumstances!
